ABOUT

Chinese Medical Science

Illustration

Most of us learned about health and the body through a “biomedical” lens — that is, conventional Western medical ways of looking at anatomy, physiology and pathology. When we think of the immune system, for example, or the actions of caffeine on the nervous system, we are using the framework of biomedicine.
Classical Chinese medicine arose in a different place and time – more than 2000 years ago. While it shares many ideas about anatomy and pathology with the science underlying biomedicine, much of its foundation is quite different. Chinese medicine is more likely to look at relationships, functional flows, and interactions between the body and nature.
My practice combines the best of both worlds. My training in Chinese medicine included plenty of information about biomedical anatomy, physiology, immunology, and other fields. I work alongside biomedical practitioners and enjoy good relationships with doctors of various modalities. My goal is to help you find the right mix of modalities for your unique healthcare situation.
Ideally, restoration of health proceeds along a path from least invasive to more invasive, depending on what is necessary — from exercise, diet and lifestyle, to manual medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, internal herbal medicine, and when all else fails, to pharmaceutical drugs and surgery. I help you avoid these maximally invasive measures, and enhance their effectiveness and minimize their side effects when they are necessary.
Through needling and adjunctive techniques, acupuncture unblocks and revitalizes stagnant areas in the body, like restoring a dammed body of a water to a healthy, free-flowing river system.

    Serena Emerson LAc, LMT

I'm a licensed acupuncturist and massage therapist with over 15 years of combined apprenticeship and professional experience in Chinese medicine. I'm thrilled to have made my home on Lummi Island and to serve its residents.
My passion is working with challenging or complex cases: injuries, chronic pain & illness, or mysterious symptoms. I developed a special interest in Japanese acupuncture after experiencing its gentle and remarkable effects first hand.
I was introduced to Chinese medicine through the practice of gongfu (Chinese martial arts), and tuina. This training remains the foundational grounding of all my work.

    Nicole LemireLAc

Nicole is a licensed acupuncturist (LAc) and has long been a student of other cultures and philosophies.
Her exploration of sociology, health, and ecology, through organic farming and permaculture, ultimately led to her study of acupuncture and East Asian medicine. Observation and study of the natural world and its cycles and systems continues to inform her practice and her approach to the cycles and systems of the human body. Her philosophy of health revolves around healing relationships — between various parts of the body, between the individual and their environment, and among all living things.
She has received training in hatha, yin, and therapeutic yoga, biodynamic cranial sacral therapy, vipassana meditation, and qi gong. She is also a student of internal martial arts through the North American Tang Shou Tao Association.
She spends her free time learning in the garden, playing in the ocean, dancing, and exploring.

HELP AND SUPPORT

Healing and Relief for all people

Every person has a unique path to recovery and health. We will work with you to create a treatment plan that addresses your individual needs and challenges.

Treatment can be a number of different healing modalities based on what kind of balance your body needs to be brought into. This can include acupuncture, tuina, moxibustion, guasha, cupping, and herbal medicine.

WHAT WE OFFER

Available Treatments

Japanese Acupuncture

We practice a Japanese style of acupuncture and moxibustion which emphasizes diagnostic palpation, precise and gentle needling, and the union of classical Chinese medical principles with an understanding of modern pathophysiology that brings out the best in both. Palpation provides immediate feedback about the success of a treatment while it is being given. The goal of treatment is to resolve constitutional imbalances and consolidate the body's natural healing abilities.

Tuina & Manual Therapy

Tuina, or Chinese manual therapy, is its own system of medicine, working to realign muscles and bones, and restore movement and circulation throughout the body.
We often use tuina and craniosacral therapy in conjunction with acupuncture to provide more dynamic treatment.
Adjunctive techniques such as cupping and guasha can successfully augment the effect of localized treatment.

Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine

We follow a methodology of herbal prescription that closely adheres to the classical texts of Chinese medicine. These texts articulate a method for treating disease that is timeless...though the environment we live in has changed over time, the human body continues to respond in similar ways as it always has. Classical herbal medicine is based upon functional and holistic parameters and naturalist philosophy, rather than the principles of modern biomedicine.
